Review
Zhang Chi was an arrogant racing champion on top of his world when everything fell apart—he was suspended from the sport for illegal racing. Five years later, a broke and aging Zhang Chi tries to get back his past glory.
While Hollywood seemingly has given up on comedy movies altogether, Chinese audience still have an outdated desire beyond one’s imagination—they like to laugh, and Pegasus offers them just that. The movie scored $255 million at the box office, a respectable number for a comedy, and it is not hard to see why.
Throughout the movie, we watch Zhang Chi’s character development I can write pages detailing the narrative structure, character growth (or lack thereof), cinematography, acting, and a thousand other factors that conclude with “it’s not an important movie, it’s not even great, but it’s entertaining.”
But I won’t.
Because comedy is a respectable art form that has been neglected for far too long. Because writing a competent comedy movie is hard.
And because Pegasus is a great movie.
The humor is non-offensive, consistent throughout the movie, and universal—you do not need cultural knowledge to understand or enjoy the movie, which is not the case for many comedies. I always think good humor transcends language, and it does in the case of Pegasus.
Still not convinced? Here are more fun facts about the movie:
Is there a misunderstanding between characters? No.
Is there romance as a subplot? Hell no.
Is there amazing, otherworldly character growth? Not really, and character development is overrated anyway—yes, I just said that.
Is there even an antagonist? The “antagonist” might be even more likable than our protagonist.
There you have it—a refreshing, entertaining, likable movie for the whole family.
