Review

As the world discovers Korean cinema, new audience are often confused by the sheer volume of movies and shows made by the country over the past decades. For beginners, it’s always a safe bet to check out the List of highest-grossing films in South Korea. The Admiral: Roaring Currents is at the top of the list, having sold 17.6 million tickets in a country of only 52 million people. That alone should conclude this review: Go watch it, it’s worth your time!

But if you’re still not convinced, here’s a quick review.

The Admiral: Roaring Currents is a 2014 South Korean movie based on one of the greatest naval battles in history— Battle of Myeongnyang, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin against the Japanese. He led a dozen ships and prevailed victorious against Japan’s 133 warships and roughly 200 logistical support ships.

The movie was extremely well-made with brutal and thrilling battle scenes. When you take into account the fact that the movie budget is only USD $18.6 million, this is even more impressive. Though the start is rather slow, the last hour is epic with non-stop action of massive scale and volume.

The movie is best seen in theaters, but even if you’ve missed the opportunity, it’s still a great movie so grab the popcorn and enjoy it with your friends.
